Menstrual disorders are disruptive physical symptoms just during or before menstruation including missed periods, heavy bleeding and mood swings. Some women get through periods easily like clockwork starting and stopping at a nearly same time every month causing a minor inconvenience.  However, some women have to experience physical symptoms during menstruation. These symptoms disturb a woman’s life in major ways. Most menstruation problems have a range of treatment options available to relieve symptoms.

Menstrual Cramps – Signs and Symptoms

  • Unusual anger
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Bloating
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Breast tenderness
  • Mood swings

How to Prevent Menstrual Cramps?

  • Limit caffeine – Try to avoid products that are rich in caffeine.
  • Reduce salt- Reduce intake of salt in your diet to lessen swelling and bloating.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol– An individual must limit smoking and alcohol which can increase the feeling of depression.
  • Healthy diet– Eat healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables.
  • Enough sleep – Get enough sleep, feel relaxed.
  • Exercise – Exercise for at least 1 hour in a day to keep your body fit and healthy.
  • Change feminine care products – During your periods, change tampons and pads at least every 4-8 hours.

Menstrual cramps – Treatment

  • Lifestyle changes– Some women have changes in menstruation because of too much exercise. Reduce the intensity and frequency of exercise that helps your periods to return normally.
  • Treating underlying disease–It is really important to treat underlying disease that may cause irregular menstruation.
  • Extreme body weight– This can also be a reason of menstrual disorders. If you are overweight it then you may have to lose body weight. If you are underweight, then try to gain weight
  • Hormonal therapy– An irregular menstrual cycle is often due to an imbalance of certain hormones in the body. Oral contraceptives containing progesterone and estrogen are commonly prescribed to control irregular periods.
  • Surgery–Surgery may be done by your doctor to correct structural problems particularly in women who want to give birth to a child. It may also be done to remove scar tissue in the reproductive tract.
