Polycystic ovarian disease or syndrome is a very common disease heard in today’s younger generation.It is a must that young girls understand this disease at an early stage as well as its causes and future implications. PCOS can be controlled by lifestyle management. It can be controlled by a multidisciplinary approach involving the gynaecologist, dietician, dermatologist and endocrinologist. It is a known fact that obese women take a longer time to conceive and when they conceive there is a higher risk of pregnancy complications such as miscarriage, diabetes and premature birth.

What should you know PCOD?

The syndrome is characterized by hormonal Imbalance occurring due to biochemical changes causing Amenorrhea or delayed menses metabolic syndrome.

The signs and symptoms associated with PCOD are:

  • Delayed Cycles
  • Amenorrhea
  • Excessive hair growth
  • Weight gain
  • Infertility
  • Associated with diabetes.

What tests should I get done, in case I have the signs and symptoms of PCOD?

  • USG
  • Hormone profile, FSH, LH, S. Prolactin, S. Testosterone, AMH
  • FBS, PPBS
  • Follicular study if causing infertility

How is PCOD treated and managed?

Post-surgery weight loss for women with PCOS has resolved metabolic and reproductive abnormalities and women are able to conceive within few months after surgery.

  • Hormonal Therapy – Newer OCP with less S/e
  • Mynosital
  • Metformin
  • Drugs for Ovulation Induction
  • Laparoscopic ovarian drilling in resistant cases
